Program Requirements


The Didactic Program in Dietetics provides the required dietetics coursework leading to a bachelor's degree or concurrent bachelor and master's degrees. Graduates of CADE-accredited / approved programs who are verified by the program director may apply for dietetic supervised practice programs/internships to establish eligibility to take the national registration examination for dietitians.

The Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics at Iowa State University includes the required coursework for the Didactic Program in Dietetics.

Dietetics curriculum information:

The concurrent program for Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Diet and Exercise at Iowa State University also includes the required coursework for the Didactic Program in Dietetics.

Diet and Exercise curriculum information:

This is an accelerated program with concurrent enrollment as an undergraduate and graduate student, and awards the B.S. and M.S. degrees jointly at the completion of the program. Interested students are enrolled as pre-diet and exercise majors at Iowa State University and then formally apply admission to the graduate program in the fall of their junior year. Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies


To successfully complete the Didactic Program in Dietetics, students must demonstrate the ability to communicate and collaborate, solve problems, and apply critical thinking skills.

The dietetics curriculum incorporates learning experiences for students to achieve foundation knowledge and skills in the areas of communications, physical and biological sciences, social sciences, research, food, nutrition, management, and health care systems.

Verification of Completion Policies


To receive a verification statement for completion of requirements through the Didactic Program, a student must take a minimum of 15 credits at the 300 or above level to include FSHN 461 and 464 (Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II) and FSHN 466 (Nutrition Education and Counseling Methods) through Iowa State University, and have earned academic credit for coursework listed on the Verification Completion Checklist.

International students must complete a degree from an American regionally-accredited university or present documentation of the equivalence of their foreign degree(s). These students must take a minimum of the following courses from Iowa State University: FSHN 461 and 464 (Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II) and FSHN 466 (Nutrition Education and Counseling Methods). The equivalent courses to FSHN 214 (Scientific Study of Food) and FSHN 463 (Community Nutrition) must have been completed through an approved/accredited US or Canadian program.

Individuals with foreign degrees are encouraged to view the American Dietetic Association's Fact Sheet for additional information about becoming a Registered Dietitian credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
