Admission Guidelines

All materials must be original - photocopies of materials will not be accepted. ISU DI participates in the computerized matching system. See link further down the page for further information.

In the event you are not selected for entrance in this internship program, your application materials may be returned to you upon receipt of written request.


NOTICE OF OPPORTUNITY TO FILE COMPLAINTS WITH THE COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION FOR DIETETICS EDUCATION

The Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education will review complaints that relate to a program's compliance with the accreditation/approval standards. The Commission is interested in the sustained quality and continued improvement of dietetics education programs but does not intervene on behalf of individuals or act as a court of appeal for individuals in matters of admission, appointment, promotion or dismissal of faculty, staff or students.

Required Information/materials:

  • Baccalaureate Degree.
  • Verification Statement of completion of Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or Declaration of Intent to Complete DPD.
  • Recommended GPA (4.0 Scale): 2.8 overall; 3.0 DPD.
  • Evidence from letters of recommendation and experiences related to dietetics of ability to perform productively.
  • Letter of application by the student (See FAQ for details).
  • Preferences may be given for qualified ISU students and Iowa residents, as well as:
    • Higher GPAs in dietetic or foods and nutrition-related courses.
    • Foodservice work experience and/or experience in a healthcare setting.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills in past experiences.
    • Documentation of at least 5 years professional work experience in dietetics or related field. (Nationwide Internship Applicants Only)
  • Recency of education is necessary as demonstrated by successful completion of coursework in diet therapy or advanced nutrition in the past five years or evidence of clinical practice. If you need to complete additional coursework in order to meet “recency of education” requirements, the actual requirements will be determined on an individual basis following discussion between the DI director and potential applicant.  Completion of recommended requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the ISU DI program.
  • Description of relevant work experience. This can include, but is not limited to, hospital/nursing home-based experience, public health or community nutrition experience, food service-related experience. Descriptions of responsibilities in all work or volunteer experiences should describe relevance of tasks and responsibilities, or indicate professional skills acquired, that can be transferred to the profession of dietetics.
  • International students must complete a degree from an American regionally-accredited university or present documentation of the equivalence of their foreign degree(s). These students must take the following courses from an American regionally-accredited university: Medical Nutrition Therapy, Nutrition Education and Counseling Methods, Scientific Study of Food/Food Science and Community Nutrition.

NOTE:  Applications will not be processed if any of the above are missing upon receipt by ISU.  (For example: letters of recommendation by specified individuals, signature of application, transcripts, and any other forms as required.) The GRE is not required.

1. The ADA Internship Application Form AND ISU Dietetics Internship Location Preference Form indicating location preference. For each work or volunteer experience listed in the application, indicate the TOTAL number of hours for which you expect credit beneath the name of the organization.

2. Letter of application by the student, limited to two pages. The letter is a formal business letter; limited to two pages or 750 words; at least 1.5 line spacing and 11 font; use standard business letter format.

Please address the following points:

  • How will the internship help you achieve your short and long-term goals?
  • What are your significant achievements and accomplishments that we may not be able to identify from the rest of the application?
  • Include an assessment of your personal characteristics, including areas of strengths and of development (consider such professional skills as Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Leadership, Initiative, Organizational Skills, Time Management, Adaptability/Reaction to Stress, Teamwork).
  • Do you have any significant events or obstacles that have affected your personal growth and preparation for the Dietetic Internship?

3.Three Letters of Reference
Three confidential letters of reference in sealed letterhead envelopes with the signature of the letter writer across the seal -- the student submits the letters of reference with the application. At least one letter should be from a previous or current employer and one from a dietetic educator.  Recommendation Form

4. Verification of Intent to Complete or Completion of Academic requirements.

5. Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended.

6. Completed Prior Assessed Learning (PAL) material if appropriate (see website for additional information.) PAL typically is applicable only the nontraditional aged intern.

All qualified applications will be reviewed by members of the ISU Dietetic Committee. Note that incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed.  The following provides information related to the relative importance of each of the components required in the application. This is the evaluation tool that is used by the reviewers and is shown here for demonstration only.

Computer Matching

All applicants to this Dietetic Internship (DI) must participate in the dietetic computer matching program. Applicants should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize their preference from any ADA-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D&D Digital Systems. This request should be made to allow turn around time for submission as indicated in the D&D Digital Systems materials postmark deadlines. There is no charge for this material. However there is a $50.00 charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking.

D&D will notify each applicant of their program matching status (ie: matched to a program or not) 3-5 days prior to the appointment date (the date by which you must accept or decline your matched position).

Applicants must call to accept or reject the computer match for the ISU Dietetics Internships no later than 1 p.m. on the appointment date. Calls prior to the appointment date will be accepted. Call Jean Anderson by 1:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on the appointment date or the applicant forfeits his/her position.

Applicants accepted into the program must disclose any physical or mental disabilities which will require accommodation during the internship program at the time of acceptance. These individuals also need to contact the Student Support Services Program website for additional assistance. Please note: Please address any special needs or special accommodations with your instructor prior to the beginning of the internship or as soon as you become aware of your needs. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form from the Disability Recourses (DR) office (515-294-6624). DR is located on the main floor of the Student Services Building, Room 1076.
